Image: Ugarden donated plant sprouts to the FRC garden for a fall planting event on October 23rd. Ugarden is a student run organization near the UGA campus that relies on volunteer help. Their mission is to produce a body of students whose focus is to build a sustainable food system with their community. Similarly, the FRC garden serves the community as an educational tool for teaching its members environmental responsibilities and being active in the role of combating food waste and food insecurity. FRC members first harvested fully grown bell peppers, green peppers, tomatoes, and basil and then cleared the FRC garden's three raised beds of weeds and roots. Next, the soil was turned and FRC divided the provided sprouts into each bed, planting kale and collards, broccoli and Brussel sprouts, and various lettuces and cabbages. Lastly, mulch was laid over the soil and the plants were watered. Any waste curated from the planting was then composted.
