In Fall 2017, the Franklin Residential College introduced composting efforts at all of their academic, service, and social events. Therefore, Rutherford Hall became the first residence hall on campus initiating composting. Shortly thereafter during that academic year, University Housing hired a Sustainable Housing Coordinator, and her work and ongoing partnership with the Office of Sustainability Composting interns widely expanded the effort to include composting in most residence halls. Compost Tumbler In February 2020 with the support of our Sustainable Housing Coordinator, the FRC introduced a Compost Tumbler Pilot Program so that students could compost food matter on site and participate in various educational service events inspired by the tumbler. This tumbler, combined with our Community Garden implemented the following year in March 2021, allows FRC members to learn about the entire food cycle on site - from food consumption, to waste, to compost, and growing new food in the garden. Read more about our Community Garden, supported by the Office of Sustainability Student Grants Program, under Food Sustainability Education in FRC.
